Long Beach Cinémathèque is proud to present its first week-long theatrical run of a contemporary independent film –- writer/director Matthew Mishory’s visionary work-of-art, A PORTRAIT OF JAMES DEAN (AKA Joshua Tree, 1951: A Portrait of James Dean).
A fearless, intimate portrait of James Dean on the cusp of becoming both a great actor and an outsider icon, A PORTRAIT OF JAMES DEAN is set in the early 1950s and focuses on Dean’s experiences as a rising star in Los Angeles. Aware of his own potential to be legendary, he is at once childlike and world-weary; acerbic and a romantic; an unrestrained playboy, and a man of great sensitivity.
Part portrait of a great artist as a young man, part love story, and part exploration of the postwar Hollywood machine, the film presents a side of James Dean seldom glimpsed. An unflinching and honest exploration of Dean’s complicated sexuality and formative relationships, A PORTRAIT OF JAMES DEAN redefines a legend for a new generation.
We are pleased to welcome writer/director Matthew Mishory, co-star/producer Edward Singletary, Jr., producer Robert Zimmer, Jr., and the cast and crew of the film to our opening night screening, Wednesday, December 12 at 7pm. Tickets are now available at the Art Theatre box office, or online by clicking here: http://tinyurl.com/dean-premiere.
