Director David Fincher’s 1999 film made Twentieth Century Fox’s CEO Rupert Murdoch so angry about the film’s subject matter in early screenings that it ultimately lead to Fox’ studio chief Bill Mechanic resigning the following year. When it was first released, it left mainstream audiences, who were expecting an adrenaline style action movie or some kind of Rocky for the 90′s, totally baffled. It only made $37 million dollars upon release in the United States on a $63 million budget, but Fight Club quickly became a cult favorite on home video, ultimately becoming one of Fox’ highest grossing DVD’s of all time, and is considered a defining movie that captured the feelings of frustrated Generation-X males all over the country.
