On Saturday, July 9, Lola's Outdoor Retro Cinema returns to Long Beach's Sunnyside Cemetery with the 1977 classic that blew minds, become a midnight-movie sensation, and launched the filmmaking career of one of cinema's most distinctive and celebrated auteurs. To open the event, we've invited improvisational electronic music duo Toaster Music for a special outdoor performance that will no doubt perfectly complement the strange and mysterious sights and sounds of Lynch's debut masterpiece.
Essentially a midlife-crisis tale about a man wrestling with the pressures of marriage, early fatherhood, and existential angst, Eraserhead stars Lynch-regular Jack Nance as Henry, a quiet man who leads a solitary life in a bleak apartment surrounded by industrial gloom. When he is invited by former girlfriend Mary X (Charlotte Stewart) to a very strange dinner with her family, he discovers that she is pregnant with his child, and promptly marries her and moves her into his apartment. Things take a decidedly strange turn when the couple's baby is born - and doesn't appear to be altogether human. And then there's that disfigured lady in the radiator...
Eraserhead was selected in 2004 for preservation in the National Film Registry by the United States Library of Congress, who selects film which they deem to be "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." After Eraserhead, David Lynch directed The Elephant Man, which earned him his first of three Academy Award nominations for Best Director; since then, Lynch's incredible volume of cinema - including such masterpieces as Blue Velvet, Wild at Heart (film), Mulholland Drive, and the cult television series Twin Peaks - have earned him over 40 international awards as Best Director.
